Its often said that dragons breath fire as a result of minerals they ate, Could it be that the gases were more akin to human digestion, our stomachs, when we eat certain foods cause gasses and us to be bloated, if we burp the gases escape, it is a common partytrick for those desperate to seek attention to set their farts on fire, all a dragon would need is a form of ignition, hey presto fire breather. tis food for thought

Thats very similar to the physiology section on the DT website and a very popular theory. The theory was made popular by Peter thingyingson with his book "The Flight of Dragons" The idea is that dragons have a flap in their throat which allows these gasses (hydrogen) to be expelled from the throat but will now allow trafic into the throat (which leads to its honey combed stomach. Therefore the dragon may well have had an ignition or spark on the roof of its mouth or perhaps on its lip to turn the hydrogen to flame. For more on that visit the physiology section. Oh, and welcome to the DT Forums

Thing is that for a form of ignition to evolve in the dragons mouth/throat, it would have to have some benefit to survival or reproduction, therefore I doubt it would be there if it was only a party trick or if it was involuntary gas release. Having said that, species have evolved some ridiculous things to look sexy. Its possible that fire breathing evolved as part of sexual selection as it was part of attracting mates. Just an idea...

Having said that, species have evolved some ridiculous things to look sexy. Its possible that fire breathing evolved as part of sexual selection as it was part of attracting mates. Just an idea... Its possible it evolved as a means to attract the opposite sex but normally that only happens with one gender of a species and there are no reports of either a male or female only breathing fire. It is far more likely that it was a natural progression for survival. Following my own theory on the Physiology section i think for a dragon to safely expel the hydrogen from its body with out making any enclosed habitat uninhabitabal it would have to remove the hydrogen alltogether. Fire seems the best ways. There are creatures which have developed acids or venoms in their body. So my thoughts are that a dragon would have developed an ignition or spark. It would already have a flap in its throat (preventing the fire going back down its throat) to control which external solids went to which stomach.

I know this is a bit late now, but I just remembered something from a film Lex and me watched called The Last Dragon, and in part of this fire breathing was used to keep the eggs warm and incubated, it shows this briefly in this video clip, I also recommend the film uk.youtube.com/watch?v=N9c-YpqgtEk

Oh well remembered. And yes that is also a very viable reason or additional reason for dragons to breath fire.

and if the friends werent dragons i expect fire breathing would be more a cause to run than a cause to clap.

Ahhh, but that would depend on the time of the year, cause if it was cold I'd be happy for a friend who could breath fire as long as they didn't singe my hair! Hehe!
